For example, The Blair Witch Project (1999) had posters of missing people, had "real life footage" which essentially got the public to believe that the narrative was completely true. This drew in the audience to think that they were watching real life footage, especially with the trailers; they produced several teasers of little clips to give the audience a few tasters of the film.
There are many others techniques that directors can use; some of which are quite basic but still extremely effective. For instance, Halloween (1978) was released on Halloween, so then it effectively influenced the audience into watch a film that has been “hyped up” so the fear factor is there.
There are different elements that is involved with producing an marketing campaign, this is a range of techniques used to promote or advertise the film itself.
- Trailer or Teasers
- Posters (billboards/ buses etc)
- The actors or stars in the film (Scream featured the famous actress Drew Barrymore, draws the audience in, gives the film some extra "brownie points". Also favourite actress/ actors may be included so they may watch the film as there favourite star is in it)
- Narrative based on true events,
- Interviews,
- Merchandise
- Soundtrack (famous bands, Psycho strings)
- Magazine front cover
- Social Media
